Dr. Shammur Absar Chowdhury

Postdoctoral Researcher

CIMeC: Center for Mind/Brain Sciences

Dr. Shammur Absar Chowdhury is currently a Post-Doctoral Researcher at QCRI. Prior to that was also a Post-Doctoral Researcher at  the University of Trento where she was investigating grammatical structure of a language, and  analyzing conversational behavior (e.g., who competes in a conversation) using deep neural network. Dr. Chowdhury received her PhD in Computer Science from the ICT Doctoral School at the University of Trento, Italy. She has received her B.Sc. in Electronics and Communication Engineering along with B.Sc. in Computer Science from the BRAC University, Bangladesh. During her PhD she has contributed to the research of spoken conversation analysis and human-machine interaction while focusing on the discourse modeling of overlapping speech, silences and predicting observed behavior (e.g., speaker satisfaction, personality, emotional coordination, and turn-taking behaviors) of the speakers from speech and its transcription (text).  She has also been part of many European Union Projects (e.g., SENSEI, Portdial). Her developed Speech Recognition System for Spoken Conversations is currently the best system for Italian. After her undergrad, she has joined as a faculty member at BRAC University, and alongside she was also a technical lead in text to speech project at CRBLP, which was funded by Prothom-alo newspaper. She has also developed the first continuous speech recognition system for Bangladeshi Bangla. With novel contributions she has published many research papers in international conferences and journals.
